Deb Gallagher, Downey School Principal; Aprile Albertelli, Westwood Integrated Preschool Director; and Nancy Malatesta, School Psychologist, will facilitate this meeting for parents who have questions about whether to send their age-appropriate children to kindergarten or retain them for an extra year of preschool. They will describe what the kindergarten day is like in Westwood, discuss differences between preschool and kindergarten, and answer questions.

Letters mailed to all eligible families outlining the process for kindergarten registration. Please return registration materials to your neighborhood elementary school by Friday, March 10.

Incoming Kindergarten Parent Information Night

Tuesday, May 23, 2017, 7pm-8pm

Parents of incoming students are invited to attend a presentation by the kindergarten teachers, school nurse, PTO/PTA president, and school principal. They will talk about the school culture, daily schedule of a kindergarten student, state-mandated kindergarten screening, required immunizations and medical records, the school’s PTO/PTA events, and answer questions.

Open House

Wednesday, May 31, 2017, 1pm-3pm

Bring your child to school and stay with him or her while meeting teachers, assistants, other parents, and classmates. If possible, please leave younger siblings at home to make this a special time for you and your kindergarten child.  Your neighborhood elementary school will contact you with more information about the schedule for the afternoon.

Mandated Screenings

Week of June 5, 2017

Scheduled by your neighborhood elementary school, incoming kindergarten students will participate in a state-mandated check of children’s visual, auditory, motor, and language skills; and of their vision and hearing functions. Children are screened in small groups by a classroom teacher or other member of our staff.  The screening takes approximately twenty minutes, and most children enjoy the experience.

Wheels on the Bus

Monday, June 12 or Tuesday, June 13

Led by Westwood Police Officer Brad Pindel, this information session allows students to board a real school bus and will include information on safe bus behavior. An evening session will take place Monday, June 12 at 6:00pm at Deerfield School; and a morning session on Tuesday, June 13 at 10:00am at Downey School. Parents and children are invited to attend either date. No registration is required.
