Message from the Principal…

A message from Literacy Specialist Karen Mangiacotti,
Happy spring everyone! What an exciting time of year. It’s the time of year I always see light bulbs start going off in children’s minds. “I get it” or the “aha” is often what I hear when reading with children. First graders have discovered that they can read and that it does makes sense. Second graders are mastering learning to read longer and more complex texts. Third, fourth and fifth graders continue to read to learn. The process is amazing to watch in each grade.
The Reading Community is very much alive and buzzing with our youngest readers. Kindergartners are having fun retelling stories with pictures and words. The children are using important details, verbs and pictures from books to help them retell. Before, during and after I read a new text the children are making connections to themselves (text-self) and to other books (text-text). They get so excited when they use their “schema” or background knowledge. Turning and talking with a classmate about a question and/or a prediction is done with ease. Kindergartners are amazed that letters make sounds, that combining letters makes words, and that words make the stories that they are creating! As always I am so proud of the kindergarteners and all my other friends in our school reading community.
