Message from the Principal
Dear Deerfield Families,
We have many ways for students to get involved at Deerfield School. One of the most visible is Student Council. Our Student Council is comprised of students in grades 3, 4, and 5. The officers are elected from students in grades 4 and 5; the classroom representatives from grades 3, 4, and 5. Each representative is assigned a class (K through 5) with whom to meet and share information. The entire Council meets throughout the school year with their advisors Ms. Chen, Ms. Hayes, and Mrs. Spellman and periodically with me. They discuss issues relevant to the student body and find ways to promote our Core Values and school spirit.
We had an exceptionally large number of students interested in Student Council this year. Candidates wrote speeches and delivered them to their peers. All students in grades 3, 4, and 5 voted and the top vote earners won the elections. We have an outstanding cadre of officers and representatives. I am confident these students will do a fantastic job for our school!

The students listed above are the ones who earned the highest number of votes. We had many other students who ran for office and did not win their elections. I can relate to how these students felt when they heard that they did not earn enough votes to serve on Student Council. I was a serial election participant from elementary school through college. There were very few leadership positions that I didn't pursue. I'm proud to say that I lost many more elections than I won. I am proud of that because it takes courage to run for an election and character to get up and try again if you fall short. I know our students who did not get elected to Student Council were hurt, and I also know that they have the courage to move past this and character to take on future challenges.
Yours truly,
Allan W. Cameron, Jr.

From the Art Room
Our Core Values are Cooperation, Academic Excellence, Acceptance, Respect, Responsibility, and Effort. Dr. Cameron expects everyone at Deerfield School to model those values at all times. To focus on the Core Values and start the year on a positive foot, the Art teachers had the all of the students make Core Value Illustrations. The illustrations were on display during Curriculum Night. They have been taken down and turned into the Deerfield Site Council. The Deerfield Site Council will choose one design from each grade level to represent their assigned core value for the school year of 2009-2010. This year's design will be print on note cards that will be available for sale throughout the school year. Proceeds will benefit the Westwood Community Chest.
Mr. Hagel and Mrs Schaffner incorporated not only discussion of the Core Values in to this project but also techniques and compositional ideas. Older students were challenged to regard the negative space as well as the positive space. Various ink techniques such as stippling, cross-hatching and hatching were encouraged. The results, at all grade levels, demonstrate strong visual communication.
