Martha Jones Elementary School Newsletter

Issue 8 | October 28, 2011

Calling all math enthusiasts. Volunteer weekly at Martha Jones. Year #7 begins!

Following are a few reasons:

From students:

"I had so much fun (when you were a math volunteer) I can't wait until I see you again.  You taught me so many things my mom thought I was cheating."

"Thank you very much for coming into our school during math.  I want to thank you for taking time out of your day just to help us out."

"In the beginning of the year I didn't like math but now I do..."

From a parent:

Being a math volunteer at Martha Jones is a very rewarding experience - and it is only a one hour per week commitment.  You do not need to be an accomplished mathematician to help out; you assist the classroom teacher with the math activity or topic of the day usually working with small groups of students.  Whether helping a second grader with addition facts or working with fourth graders on geometric shape manipulative resources, imagine witnessing first-hand the learning process and the confirmation of accomplishment (usually portrayed by a smile) on the students' faces.   You also get a view into the classroom dynamic and the math curriculum as it happens in real time - a truly worthwhile and enlightening experience.  Mark Plecinoga

From the principal:

For the past six years we have put in place a Parent Math Volunteer program.  During math lessons, students routinely work in pairs, groups, and individually on a range of skills, concepts, and activities. An extra set of adult hands allows the teacher to adjust the core math curriculum to meet the particular needs of the students. The expectation is for each volunteer to commit to one hour/week throughout the year. Rather than place parents in their own child's classroom, a match is made based on the needs in different grades and the mathematical background of the volunteer.

This year Ms. Christine Size, our math specialist, will coordinate the program. If you have questions, or are able to sign up, we will find you a classroom!  Please be in touch with Ms. Size atcsize@westwood.k12.ma.us or leave a message in the office. This is a wonderful opportunity to share your love of math and help increase the learning of our students.

Have a wonderful weekend. Hope to see you at the Halloween Fair tonight!

Sincerely,

Peggy Scott

Martha Jones News

Conversation with the Principal

Please come join our next conversation on Friday, November 4th at 9 AM in the Library.

One topic we will discuss is homework - goals from school, goals from home.

We'll also touch on other topics that were generated at last month's conversation such as Student Council, WEF grants, Site Council survey on bullying and follow-up in school.  If you are a working parent and this time is inconvenient, please let me know if a late afternoon time would be better for the Decemberconversation.  If childcare is an issue, we can always provide legos and drawing paper.  As always, if you would like to set up a private meeting about any questions or concern - please call Mr. C. in the office and we'll find a time. In short - stay in touch!

Next walk to school - next t-shirt day!

Please get out your sneakers, and find the Martha Jones t-shirt for our next walk to school  on the first Wednesday of the month, November 2nd.  Families should start walking from the Temple parking lot, Buckmaster Pond, or Tamarack Path.

No Child Left Behind (NCLB) School Report Cards

The primary goal of the No Child Left Behind law is to ensure that all public school students are proficient in English/language arts and math by the year 2014. The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education uses measures, including MCAS, to determine whether public school districts and schools are making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) towards that goal. Each year, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education issues district and school report cards. The report cards outline the AYP performance of the school district as a whole and each individual school. You can access the Westwood NCLB report cards by clicking on this link /index.cfm?pid=28515. If you would like a paper copy of the district's or school's report card, or if you have any questions, please call the school's main office.

Parent Book Group

The "Blessing of a Skinned Knee" parent book discussion is rescheduled for Friday, November 18th at 9:15 in the Martha Jones Library.  Please read the first chapter for the first discussion.  We will set future dates based on the schedules of the participants.  All Martha Jones parents are welcome.  If childcare is an issue - legos are provided for little ones not in school. Apologies for any inconvenience caused by the date change.  Hope to see you on the 18th.

Native American Dan Cripps visits Ks and 5th Grade

This week, Dan Cripps visited the Ks and 5th Graders to share his interesting and entertaining perspective on their way of life.   As summarized by one of our 5th graders: "Dan Cripps taught us may things about Native Americans, their culture and how they survived. The 'Plains' Native Americans built teepees and hunted buffalo. The Eastern Woodland Natives built Wigwams and long houses and used shells as knives, spoons and jewelry. The Mexican Native Americans used Adobe (dry mud) to make pottery and to build houses called Pueblos".
