Message from the Principal

Hello Deerfield Families,

One of the benefits of being in a small school is that we can create opportunities for all of our students to interact in positive ways. I am excited to let you know about a new Student Council initiative that brought our students together and supported people in need during the holiday season.

On Monday, the entire school met in the Deerfield gym to participate in the Cards Because We Care project. The Student Council officers, committee members, and advisors developed the project as a way to help people in need during the holidays and bring our school community together. Classes were paired and worked together on cards for specific groups of people. The card recipients were identified by members of the Student Council. Here are the groups the students made cards for and the students who worked together to make the cards:

1K and 5H made cards for Boston Children's Hospital

1S and 5G made cards for Ellis Nursing Home

KG and 4UT Westwood Senior Center, Meals on Wheels, and Food Pantry

KB and 4S made cards for Franciscan Children's Hospital

3C and 2M made cards for Dana Farber

3CC and 2H made cards for 1/182 infantry battalion of the Massachusetts Army National Guard stationed at FOB Phoenix, Afghanistan

I really enjoyed seeing the students work together on such a worthwhile project. Our Student Council worked diligently to organize this event that will make many people happy. I hope that Cards Because We Care becomes a Deerfield holiday tradition.

Deerfield School Winter Concert
This week we also enjoyed the annual Winter Concert. Ryan Polansky played Deck the Halls on his violin and our 5th grade chorus sang a number of seasonal songs. The students dressed-up for the event and the looked and sounded wonderful. I want to thank the students for their effort and excellent performance, Mrs. Saada-Smith for preparing them and conducting the concert, and Miss Chen for accompanying on piano.

Thank You
The staff and I want to thank the PTO and Deerfield parents who dropped off treats for us to enjoy. I loved eating the cookies, fruit, cupcakes, and other goodies. We appreciate your thoughtfulness, generosity, and culinary talents. Thank you!

Yours truly,

Allan Cameron

WESC

Westwood Elementary Schools Coalition (WESC) is a not-for-profit volunteer organization which raises funds through one annual fundraiser for the Parent Teacher Organizations of the five elementary schools within Westwood.  Traditionally, a dinner and auction is held in March and over the last seventeen years WESC has raised over $875,000 through the generosity of local businesses and families.  These funds enrich and support the educational opportunities of all our young students.

This year's event will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2012, and the planning is well underway. You will not want to miss being a part of this year's successful evening!!  We need your help with this incredibly valuable event.  It is a great opportunity to help enrich our children's education as well as meet people from the other elementary schools.

One of the highlights of this year's event will be the live and silent auction featuring a wide array of spectacular items.  This is where we need your help!  Do you have a talent or expertise? A vacation home you can spare for a week or weekend? Coveted sports tickets, a boutique or restaurant connection?  If so, please consider donating to the WESC auction.  You can be creative, do you have a group of friends, or a neighborhood that could put together a basket, or donate a large item?  No donation is too big or too small!!

Please contact Lori Bass;  HYPERLINK "mailto:lori@milobass.com" lori@milobass.com (781-320-9969)  if you are interested in helping solicit items or you would like to donate to the auction. Thank you so much. We count on your support!
