Message from the Principal
Hello Deerfield Families,
One of the best parts of my job is I get to visit all of the classrooms and learning spaces in our school. The diversity of what I see is amazing! For example, as I walked down the hallway before writing this essay I saw a teacher working with a small group of students at a desk in the hallway, a class of students practicing gymnastics in the gym, a group of students checking-out laptops from our computer cart, our nurse bandaging a cut, and two teachers talking about a new reading project they are considering for their students. There was a lot going on! This gave me an idea.
Periodically, I am going to ask Deerfield staff members to write an entry for Leaps and Bounds about something happening in their classrooms. This will give you the opportunity to read about some of the interesting experiences your children are having in school. If your children are like mine, this may be the best way to learn about what is happening in school:
Me "How was school today?"
My kids "Good."
Me "Did you learn anything new?"
My kids "Yeah."
Me "What did you learn?"
My kids "Nothing."
Me "Nothing?"
My kids "I forgot."
I'll start recruiting guest writers for Leaps and Bounds this week. Be on the lookout for feature writers!

PTO Update
REMINDER: GAME NIGHT FRIDAY JAN 20th 7:00pm
$5.00 per person capped at $20.00 per family (you will receive two game cards, a drink and a snack)

WESC
Westwood Elementary Schools Coalition (WESC) is a not-for-profit volunteer organization which raises funds through one annual fundraiser for the Parent Teacher Organizations of the five elementary schools within Westwood. Traditionally, a dinner and auction is held in March and over the last seventeen years WESC has raised over $875,000 through the generosity of local businesses and families. These funds enrich and support the educational opportunities of all our young students.
This year's event will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2012, and the planning is well underway. You will not want to miss being a part of this year's successful evening!! We need your help with this incredibly valuable event. It is a great opportunity to help enrich our children's education as well as meet people from the other elementary schools.
One of the highlights of this year's event will be the live and silent auction featuring a wide array of spectacular items. This is where we need your help! Do you have a talent or expertise? A vacation home you can spare for a week or weekend? Coveted sports tickets, a boutique or restaurant connection? If so, please consider donating to the WESC auction. You can be creative, do you have a group of friends, or a neighborhood that could put together a basket, or donate a large item? No donation is too big or too small!!

WEF GRANTS
The next Westwood Education Foundation mini grant deadline is coming up. If you have any ideas that might need funding this is the time to get your request in.
Mini Grant Deadline: January 15, 2012
Mini Grant $ amount has been increased to $1,500.
If you need help writing the grant please contact one of us on the PTO board.

You can now purchase your Deerfield Logo Wear at the school anytime. Order slips can be printed out from the Deerfield website, /index.cfm?pid=10208 You can find it under The Bulletin in Forms and Publications.
