Message from the Principal

Hello Deerfield Families,

I am pleased to announce that next Friday, February 3, is Movie Night at Deerfield School! Movie Night is a Student Council event that our committee representatives and leaders organize and run with help from the Student Council advisors. In years past our students, and the parents of our younger students, packed like sardines into the gym for a screening of a kid-friendly movie. It was hot and stuffy and smelled like a rented bowling shoe after league night. Last year we tried something new. We had each grade in one classroom, supervised by two adults, to watch a movie of their choosing (age appropriate, of course). The new format worked well, so we are using it again this year.

The committee members solicited movie preferences from the students in each grade. Nominations were made, votes counted, and winners identified. The line-up for 2011-2012 Deerfield Movie Night is:

Kindergarten: Marmaduke
Grade 1: Kung Fu Panda
Grade 2: Smurfs
Grade 3: Soul Surfer
Grade 4: Nim's Island
Grade 5: Soul Surfer

Several people are responsible for the creative thinking and hard work that are going to make Movie Night a success. The Student Council advisors; Ms. Chen, Ms. Hayes, and Mrs. Spellman; worked diligently with the student council leaders and committee members to make this event a success. The students were fabulous. They brainstormed ideas, made posters, and are ready to help on the big night. The students are:

Officers: Matt Capone, Isabella Medina, John McKinnon, and Grace Murphy
3rd grade: Sarah Bernardo, Hailey Casey, Tommy Krumsoek, Juliana Ventura
4th grade: Anne-Marie Maughn, Natalie DeMaio, Bella Hamdan, Sarah Roycroft
5th grade: Johanna Barrows, John Delfeld, Katherine Keith

Most notably for parents, we have recruited enough staff members to cover every classroom, so this is a drop-off event for all students! Let's have a big round of applause for our dedicated chaperones who volunteered to spend a Friday evening with Deerfield students:

Mrs. Casey, Ms. Chen, Mrs. DeAngelis,. Ms. Greene, Ms. Hayes, Mrs. Krass, Mr. Kuklentz, Mrs. McCarty, Mrs. Nesbitt, Mrs. Schaffner, Mrs. Spellman,, Mrs. Sullivan, and Ms. Tosches

My kids and I are looking forward to the big event! I hope to see you at Movie Night at the Deerfield Theater, Friday February 3, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

Yours truly,

Allan Cameron

Student Council Movie Night Update

Student Council Advisors, Officers, and Committees have been busy this year, from planning Spirit Days and an All-School Holiday Card-Making Event to Movie Night.  This year's Movie Night will take place on Friday, February 3rdfrom 6:00-8:00.  Deerfield School will be turned into Deerfield Showcase Cinemas with 6 different theatres, one for each grade level.  We will announce the movies next week after grades vote on their movie choice.  Movie Night will be chaperoned by Deerfield staff and will be a drop-off event for all students.

Snacks and raffles will be sold.  If you have any raffle items (games, activities, toys, etc.) to donate for our raffle, please send them to Room 6.  Please e-mail Ms. Chen, Ms. Hayes, or Mrs. Spellman if you have any questions.

Thank you!  Go, Pats!

WESC

Westwood Elementary Schools Coalition (WESC) is a not-for-profit volunteer organization which raises funds through one annual fundraiser for the Parent Teacher Organizations of the five elementary schools within Westwood.  Traditionally, a dinner and auction is held in March and over the last seventeen years WESC has raised over $875,000 through the generosity of local businesses and families.  These funds enrich and support the educational opportunities of all our young students.

This year's event will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2012, and the planning is well underway. You will not want to miss being a part of this year's successful evening!!  We need your help with this incredibly valuable event.  It is a great opportunity to help enrich our children's education as well as meet people from the other elementary schools.

One of the highlights of this year's event will be the live and silent auction featuring a wide array of spectacular items.  This is where we need your help!  Do you have a talent or expertise? A vacation home you can spare for a week or weekend? Coveted sports tickets, a boutique or restaurant connection?  If so, please consider donating to the WESC auction.  You can be creative, do you have a group of friends, or a neighborhood that could put together a basket, or donate a large item?  No donation is too big or too small!!

Please contact Lori Bass;  HYPERLINK "mailto:lori@milobass.com" lori@milobass.com (781-320-9969)  if you are interested in helping solicit items or you would like to donate to the auction. Thank you so much. We count on your support!
