Message from the Principal

Hello Deerfield Families,

I am very excited to report that we completed auditions for the PTO sponsored 4th and 5th grade play. Deerfield was one of the first elementary schools in Westwood to have a play and it continues to be a positive tradition at our school. Every year the play has gotten better. Last year was the first production that allowed every student who wanted a part to participate in the play. This year we improved further by having the director, Christine, write a play that enables all 5th graders to have at least one line. The play is called Lights! Camera! Music! and we are very excited for the show.

It takes a lot of courage to audition for a musical. Each student who wanted a major role had to sing a solo during auditions. This is not easy for most students (I couldn't imagine singing by myself in front of an audience). I commend everyone who auditioned:

Author Grace Lin Visits the Deerfield!!

Thank you to the PTO and the parent community!

Your support of the PTO funded author and illustrator Grace Lin's visits with all students this past week. On Monday, Grace met with kindergarten through third grade students. During the visits Grace invited students to participate in the making of a book by becoming editors, art directors, printers, binders, Check out the classroom websites to see pictures from the day.

Grace guided students in "draw a-longs". Students followed along while Grace directed them to create their own dragons, rabbits, and dogs. Ms. Greene's students were given a drawing of a monkey for their classroom. While Ms. Bellan's room has a new giraffe in the class.

On Thursday, Grace was back at school working with second grade and the fourth and fifth grade students.

WESC

Westwood Elementary Schools Coalition (WESC) is a not-for-profit volunteer organization which raises funds through one annual fundraiser for the Parent Teacher Organizations of the five elementary schools within Westwood.  Traditionally, a dinner and auction is held in March and over the last seventeen years WESC has raised over $875,000 through the generosity of local businesses and families.  These funds enrich and support the educational opportunities of all our young students.

This year's event will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2012, and the planning is well underway. You will not want to miss being a part of this year's successful evening!!  We need your help with this incredibly valuable event.  It is a great opportunity to help enrich our children's education as well as meet people from the other elementary schools.

One of the highlights of this year's event will be the live and silent auction featuring a wide array of spectacular items.  This is where we need your help!  Do you have a talent or expertise? A vacation home you can spare for a week or weekend? Coveted sports tickets, a boutique or restaurant connection?  If so, please consider donating to the WESC auction.  You can be creative, do you have a group of friends, or a neighborhood that could put together a basket, or donate a large item?  No donation is too big or too small!!

Please contact Lori Bass;  HYPERLINK "mailto:lori@milobass.com" lori@milobass.com (781-320-9969)  if you are interested in helping solicit items or you would like to donate to the auction. Thank you so much. We count on your support!
