Dear Deerfield Families,

This week we have a guest writer for Leaps and Bounds. Diane Kaiser is the Director of Art for Westwood Public Schools. She can be reached at  HYPERLINK "mailto:dkaiser@westwood.k12.ma.us" dkaiser@westwood.k12.ma.us.

Youth Art Month is an annual national observance each March to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school art programs. Youth Art Month provides a forum for acknowledging the skills students develop through art education, including self-expression, cooperation with others, and critical thinking. All of these skills are vital to the success of our future leaders.

For many years now, the Westwood Art Department elementary teachers have celebrated Youth Art Month by holding a town-wide art exhibit of student work in the Children's Room of the Westwood Public Library. This showcase communicates the exciting educational and creative work going on in the art classrooms and shows concrete examples of the curriculum-based art projects. Each elementary school will be represented with 10-15 examples of artwork. Although it would be wonderful to have every student in the town represented, during the year each of the art teachers makes a concerted effort to display every student's work at least once in their rotating art displays.

The annual Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards were recently presented. Participating middle schools and high schools across the state submitted their work for juried awards. This year, there were thirty-seven Gold Key, Silver Key, and Honorable Mention winners from Westwood, including the children of two Deerfield staff members, Tricia DeAngelis and Judy Kress. The winning student artwork is on-view at the State Transportation Building at 10 Park Plaza in Boston through April 7th. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The awards ceremonies for this year's winners will be held Sunday, March 11, 2012 at the John Hancock Hall in Boston.

Elementary and middle school student art exhibits will continue at Vello's Restaurant at 679 High Street in Westwood through the end of the school year. Art pieces are displayed at Vello's on a rotating basis throughout the school year thanks to the generosity and support of owner Victor Servello.

I am very thankful to have such a great visual arts program in Westwood. Thank you for your support. Please contact me or our art teacher, Elaine Schaffner, if you have any specific questions about art instruction at Deerfield.

Yours truly,

Allan Cameron
