Message from the Principal
Dear Deerfield Families,
Parents often ask how class placements are made and what role they may play in the process. This letter is meant to answer those questions and to explain the process that is used in Westwood's five elementary schools.
After April vacation the classroom teachers, special education teachers, specialists, psychologist, and I will begin the process of class placement for September 2012. We review information about each child's academic, social, and personal characteristics. We use that information to place each child with the teacher and classmates that will foster learning. Our primary goal is to assign each child to a classroom in which s/he can develop academically and socially.
If you have information about your child's learning needs that you would like to share, please send it to me in writing (letter or email) by April 27, 2012. If you are the parent of multiples (twins, triplets, etc), you may specify whether you want your children placed in the same class or different classes. Requests will not be accepted for specific teachers. Letters and emails that name a teacher will be discarded. I will copy the letters and emails I receive and distribute them to the placement team members for consideration. Please note that letters and emails are not kept from previous years since children change and grow and we make decisions based on current information.
Class assignments will be indicated on report cards mailed home in June. All class placements are final. Please contact me if you have any questions about the process.
Yours truly,
Allan Cameron

PTO Update
ART NIGHT
Art Night is just around the corner. This year Art night will be held on Wednesday, May 16. This is a fun event for the family and a great way to come in and view your children's art work. In order to make this night a success we need to call on a few parent volunteers to help come in and mat the art work that will be displayed. We will also be looking for volunteers to help set up the day of the event. If you are able to help please contact Monica Esposito, monica_esposito@comcast.net. We will put together a schedule for volunteers. We will also be looking for someone to co-chair the event next year. We thank you in advance for all your support.

Physical Education News
GREAT NEWS! Deerfield School raised $1,600 dollars for our Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser! Thank you all for making this fundraiser such a success! OOPS! Unfortunately, the American Heart Association had a major computer glitch and the names of all the Deerfield students were accidentally erased. The American Heart Association wants to be sure that all the students who participated in the fundraiser receive their gifts. If you can please send the name of your child, grade, and the amount she or he raised for the fundraiser to Ms. Wine (jwine@westwood.k12.ma.us), that would be wonderful. We apologize for any inconvenience that has caused and we will ensure that this does not happen again next year. Thanks for your cooperation.

Attention 3rd Grade Parents...
On Tuesday, April 10th at 7:30 PM, the Westwood Historical Society will present a special event "A Typical 1800s School Day." The event will describe the Historical Society's Third Grade program, which is one of the most unique in the state. Irene Buonopane, who coordinates the program, will be the featured speaker. The lecture provides an opportunity for parents to learn what their children will experience when participating in this program.

FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE:
Students entering 6th grade at Thurston Middle School in the fall, need a current immunization and physical exam form delivered to the health office before school begins. Please check the Thurston Middle School Health Office website for immunization requirements. I am able to accept forms from current Deerfield 5th grade students until the last day of school in June. After that, you must bring all forms directly to the Thurston Middle School.
Please call the health office if you have any questions.
