Message from the Principal

Hello Deerfield Families,

Can you remove a wart with duct tape? Is it possible to make ice cream in a plastic baggie? What are the characteristics of rocks and minerals? What happens when you keep an egg in vinegar for a week? Is it possible to shoot a homemade rocket across the entire Deerfield back field? These are only a few of the many interesting questions our young scientists explored in preparation for the Deerfield School PTO Science Fair. Just prior to April vacation, over nearly 60% of Deerfield students volunteered to participate in this annual Deerfield tradition. That is our highest participation rate yet! Parents, teachers, and students learned about a range of interesting topics while viewing the projects. I am pleased to report that all participants enjoyed the experience, learned a lot of interesting information, and shared some wonderfully creative projects.

I am very proud of all of our young scientists! Their enthusiasm for their projects and for science in general was evident. It was obvious that they invested a lot of time and energy into their work. Many adults and Deerfield alumni also invested a lot of time and energy into the Science Fair: Andi Yanoff, Emily Murphy, Stephanie Wasserman, Suzanne Bellanger, Deb and Tony Cautela, and Abby Homiller were the parents who organized, set-up, cleaned-up, worked the door, mentored young scientists, and ran the entire show. They spent hours coordinating the logistics of the event which would not have happened without their hard work. In addition, we had several Deerfield alumni who helped out. It was great to see Samantha Bartholomew, Derek Yanoff, Aram Donabed, Nina Piemontese, and Thomas Keith back at Deerfield. I hope to see them, and all of you and your children, at the next Deerfield Science Fair.

Yours truly,
Allan Cameron

We are in the process of accumulating a list of open positions for next year. Please watch for an email in the next few weeks. If you have any new ideas or suggestions please call or email one of us.
Important dates for the next few months:

May 16 Night of the Arts 5:30 -7:30pm

June 1 School Walk A Thon and Family Picnic 5:15pm
June 7 Field Day

Night of the Arts, Wednesday May 16, 5:00 - 7:30

This year the PTO is combining our annual art night with a book fair. The following is what will be happening the night of the event.

Art Display - Every student of Deerfield will have one of their works of art displayed. Mrs. Schaffner has saved one or two works from every student throughout the year.
Raffle - A few local artists have donated works of art for us to raffle at our Night of the Arts. Be sure to purchase raffle tickets for your chance to take home one of these masterpieces.
Music - Various students will be on hand to entertain us with their musical talents.

As for the book fair, Best Book Fairs will be on hand to sell a wide variety of quality books for students of all grades, with many new titles. Books make wonderful gifts; and with the end of the school year quickly approaching, this is also a great opportunity to purchase a book for your child's classroom. Teacher wish lists will be available at the book fair.

We are going to need a few volunteers during the night. If you would like to help with the book fair please contact Megan Coppola atmegancoppola@me.com. If you would like to help out with the art portion of the night please contact monica_esposito@comcast.net.

WESC NEWS:

Building on the huge success of this year's WESC social and fundraiser, the WESC steering committee is looking ahead to next year's event.  WESC fundraises on behalf of all five elementary schools.  Thanks to your generous support, this year's event raised $55,000; these funds are given to each elementary school PTA/PTO to use as needed.

Please join us for the initial kick off meeting which will be held on Monday, May 21 at the Westwood Senior Center at 7:30 p.m.    We're looking for individuals to serve on the following committees:  publicity, auction solicitation, corporate sponsorship, event planning, ticket sales, and design/layout.
