Message from the Principal

Hello Deerfield Families,

The annual Westwood Elementary Math League competition happened recently and I am very proud to report that all of our teams did very well. In fact, for the first time ever, Deerfield is hosting a winning trophy! Our third grade team came in first place, soundly defeating the other Westwood elementary school teams. The evidence of their triumph, a trophy with our school name inscribed on the side, is proudly displayed in the foyer outside the main office. Congratulations to them and to all of our Math League competitors! You all represented Deerfield very well.

Our competitors deserve the most praise, but the people behind the scenes also deserve a lot of credit. Jenifer Latchford and Beth Johnson were the leaders of Math League and they did an amazing job! They coordinated with the other schools, brought interesting ideas to our teams, and managed all of the many logistics. Their leadership was invaluable. The coaches also provided amazing leadership and dedication. They arrived before school for each practice, coached the kids through some challenging problems, and shared their love of math with the kids. We would not have had the level of success we have had with Math League, this year or in years past, without our outstanding coaches. Finally, the parents of our Math League competitors deserve a lot of praise. I know how difficult it is to get my kids to school on time, so I appreciate the Herculean efforts that must have been mustered to get the Math League kids to school so early each week. Thank you to all of the adults who helped support Math League. I hope to see you all again next year!

Yours truly,

Allan Cameron

If you have any new ideas or suggestions please call or email one of us.  Michelle Sutrich  at mfsutrich@aol.com or Abby Stern at abbymstern@gmail.com

Important dates for the next few months:

May 16 Night of the Arts 5:30 -7:30pm
May 29 PTO Meeting 9:15am
June 1 School Walk A Thon and Family Picnic 5:15pm
June 7 Field Day

Night of the Arts, Wednesday May 16, 5:00 - 7:30

This year the PTO is combining our annual art night with a book fair. The following is what will be happening the night of the event.

Art Display - Every student of Deerfield will have one of their works of art displayed. Mrs. Schaffner has saved one or two works from every student throughout the year.
Raffle - A few local artists have donated works of art for us to raffle at our Night of the Arts. Be sure to purchase raffle tickets for your chance to take home one of these masterpieces.
Music - Various students will be on hand to entertain us with their musical talents.

As for the book fair, Best Book Fairs will be on hand to sell a wide variety of quality books for students of all grades, with many new titles. Books make wonderful gifts; and with the end of the school year quickly approaching, this is also a great opportunity to purchase a book for your child's classroom. Teacher wish lists will be available at the book fair.

We are going to need a few volunteers during the night. If you would like to help with the book fair please contact Megan Coppola atmegancoppola@me.com. If you would like to help out with the art portion of the night please contact monica_esposito@comcast.net.

WESC NEWS:

Building on the huge success of this year's WESC social and fundraiser, the WESC steering committee is looking ahead to next year's event.  WESC fundraises on behalf of all five elementary schools.  Thanks to your generous support, this year's event raised $55,000; these funds are given to each elementary school PTA/PTO to use as needed.

Please join us for the initial kick off meeting which will be held on Monday, May 21 at the Westwood Senior Center at 7:30 p.m.    We're looking for individuals to serve on the following committees:  publicity, auction solicitation, corporate sponsorship, event planning, ticket sales, and design/layout.
