Message from the Principal

Dear Deerfield Families,

Today we had the annual Deerfield School Memorial Day ceremony. The entire school community and many family members gathered at Deerfield to honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for America. The ceremony included patriotic recitations, songs, and reflections. The students in 2M presented the history of Memorial Day, 2H wrote and read reflections about the American Flag, and the entire 3rd grade read the names of many of the Westwood veterans who fought for America from the 1700s until the present.

We started a new tradition a few years ago with the Pledge of Allegiance at the Memorial Day Ceremony. The classroom teachers and I selected a student or two from each class, who exemplified our core values throughout the school year, to lead the Pledge. Our leaders for this year were Jason Guo, Raha Favakeh, Michelle Costello, Alex Heckscher, Chris Rogers, Luci Vitali, CJ Martin, Julia Preskenis, Bella Hamdam, Hannah Donoahue, Catherine Sullivan, Zach Salvatore, Michael Gotti, Katherine Keith, and Sofia Esposito. In addition, we had two special guest Pledge Leaders, my son Scotty and daughter Annie.

I invited Scotty and Annie because something unusual will happen at this Memorial Day Ceremony: I will wear my Army dress uniform. I am doing this because Kristen Evans, the Sheehan principal, asked me to wear my uniform and talk to the Sheehan students about Memorial Day. Since I will wear my uniform there, I thought I should wear it to our ceremony too (also, I only have a few minutes to get from Deerfield to Sheehan for their ceremony, so changing clothes would be difficult). Since my own children have never seen me in my uniform, I invited them to the ceremony too. Although I will dressed differently than I typically do, I will make sure to keep the students' focus on the people who gave their lives for America and not on what I am wearing.

I hope you enjoy the long weekend and take a few moments to think about the people who gave their lives for America.

Yours truly,

Allan Cameron

Volunteers are needed to run games 8:30-11:15 and/or serve lunch 11:15-12:00.
This is a great opportunity for Dads, Moms, older siblings and others. All games have instructions and well known by the kids.

If you can help, please email your availability and preference for games or lunch to: DeerfieldFieldDay@gmail.com by June 1st.  Confirmation will be sent out a few days before field day.

There are 18 games--9 at the k-2 level and 9 at the 3-5 level. Each game is assigned 2 adults.  If you would like to work with a friend, on a favorite game or with one of the age groups, please indicate it in your email. Every attempt is made to assign parents to the age group of their child or one of their children.

For lunch, 2 adults are assigned to each classroom to serve lunch.
Four volunteers will be needed to come early (10:00) to help set up.
The Raindate is June 14th.

Field Day is always a great day; enjoyed by the kids, staff and volunteers.
THANK YOU in advance for your help.

Thanks so much!!

Posion ivy update....

We have some poison ivy on the edges of the back fields. Allan spoke with the superintendent and the operations manager about the problem. The maintenance staff removed all of the poison ivy by the playground by hand, but they cannot spray herbicide on the plants when the students are in school or using the fields. The plan is to spray the herbicide on the poison ivy this summer when the fields are closed due to the roof construction project. They hope to have it all gone by September. Until then, we will keep the students away from it during the school day.
