Message from the Principal
Dear Deerfield Families,
Dear Deerfield Families,
I am excited to report that one of the best days of the elementary school year is happening next week (weather permitting). On Thursday June 7 we have our annual Field Day in the morning and Deerfield Talent Show in the afternoon! These are two fun and active events that almost all of our students love and look forward to every year. I still have many great memories from Field Days when I was in elementary school, and I even have a picture of me and two friends in a talent show lip-synching "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys. My wife recently commented that my hair looked like Sean Cassidy's hair in the picture.
This memory-making day at Deerfield is scheduled for Thursday June 7. Judith Wine, our PE teacher, has coordinated with parent volunteers to schedule the Field Day portion of the day. The students will be outside playing games from around 8:30 until 11:30, when we will break for lunch. All students will have a picnic lunch of pizza, fruit, and Popsicles; if you prefer your child have another lunch please pack one and send it to school with him or her. Please make sure your child wears sneakers, comfortable clothes that are appropriate for the weather, a hat, and sunscreen. Also, please make sure your child has a labeled water container. The students will take several drink breaks throughout the day.
After lunch is over, the students will go inside the gym to watch the Deerfield Talent Show. They will see an array of interesting events, including singing, dancing, and acting. We are not having an evening performance of the Talent Show this year, so any family members who wish to watch the show may join us in the gym. We'll have seats set-up in the back of the gym for family members. The Talent Show will run from 12:15 until about 1:15.
We have a fun day planned for Thursday June 7. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Yours truly,
Allan Cameron

Calling All Volunteers
Volunteers are needed to run games 8:30-11:15 and/or serve lunch 11:15-12:00.
This is a great opportunity for Dads, Moms, older siblings and others. All games have instructions and well known by the kids.
If you can help, please email your availability and preference for games or lunch to: DeerfieldFieldDay@gmail.com by June 1st. Confirmation will be sent out a few days before field day.
There are 18 games--9 at the k-2 level and 9 at the 3-5 level. Each game is assigned 2 adults. If you would like to work with a friend, on a favorite game or with one of the age groups, please indicate it in your email. Every attempt is made to assign parents to the age group of their child or one of their children.
For lunch, 2 adults are assigned to each classroom to serve lunch.
Four volunteers will be needed to come early (10:00) to help set up.
The Raindate is June 14th.
Field Day is always a great day; enjoyed by the kids, staff and volunteers.

Art Note from Mrs. Schaffner and Lisa Walker
The Westwood Educational Foundation kindly funded a mini-grant submitted by myself and Westwood ceramic artist Lisa Walker titled "Commemorative Clay Creations". Through this grant, 5th grade art students were able to work with earth clay, glazing and firing while using additive and subtractive clay construction techniques. They created a clay relief sculpture tile that serves as a visual memoir of their time at Deerfield. It will go home with them on a small brass display easel. These keepsake tiles are now on exhibit in the front display case at Deerfield until the end of the school year. We hope you will all have an opportunity to view them. This special project was a success in part due to the help of several parent volunteers who came in at various points along the creative process. Lisa Walker and I would like to say a special "thank you" to the following parent volunteers: Deirdre Belcher, Margaret Carr, Cathy Ellis, Monica Esposito, Kirke Hall, Marlene Morris and Kristyn Shields. An additional "thank you" to day custodian Thomas Crowley who helped us set up in the cafeteria. We would also like to send a message of appreciation to the Westwood Educational Foundation for the funding and support of this unique opportunity for the 5th grade art students.
