Leaps & Bounds
Martha Jones Elementary School Newsletter

Dear Parents and Families,
It is hard to know how to write my final Leaps and Bounds. I am filled with thanksgivings for all the wonderful people I have met since coming to Westwood. After 13 years, I am reminded most of all of the lyrics from the King & I, "When you become a teacher, by your pupils you'll be taught...." For me those lyrics should be expanded to, "When you become a principal, by your pupils, and their parents, and their teachers you'll be taught." I have learned priceless lessons at Martha Jones - about what it means to be a community that cares deeply about children, the importance of respecting each individual who walks through the door, and about courage, acceptance, and having fun as we work hard together.
Your children have truly made not only my days, but also my years at Martha Jones. I will miss your wonderful, "safe, kind, creative, enthusiastic, and hardworking" students who have taught me about curiosity, openness, forgiveness, and laughter - each one has a unique way of seeing and being in the world that has made my world bigger as a result.
Have a relaxing summer together enjoying the season's gift of time and soaking up all your children have to teach about forgiveness, laughter, and courage!
With my thanks and best wishes,
Peggy Scott

Bravo! Brava!
Congratulations to all 4th and 5th grade Band members for a rousing and musical concert on Tuesday night. Special recognition should also go to conductors, Joel Yennior and Lori Labedz.
Volunteers Extraordinaire
Special thanks go to our PTO officers - Sue Becker, Michelle Cawley, Rich Pond, Frank Vitiello, Kara Johnsen, and Phyllis Musto. Their unfailing flexibility, positive outlooks, energy, thoroughness, and welcoming styles enabled all members of the school community to feel valued, heard and supported. Well done and thank you!
OPEN ENROLLMENT OPTION
The Westwood Public Schools has an open enrollment policy that enables parents to request an intra-district transfer for their children. The process is initiated by parents by sending a formal written request to the Superintendent by August 1st. Mr. Antonucci reviews the requests, making decisions with the principals based upon enrollment in the sending and receiving schools.
Best Wishes!
Yesterday afternoon Superintendent Antonucci honored Westwood faculty and staff who have reached "landmark" years of teaching. Congratulations and thanks to Mrs. Layton and Mrs. Moody for their 15 years of dedication to the children of Westwood!
Growing by Leaps & Bounds
The Lost & Found has grown again by leaps and bounds. Please remind your child to look for lost items, or come look yourself before school is over. Any unclaimed items are donated to a homeless shelter.
Thanks for Leaps and Bounds
Not one issue of Leaps and Bounds would reach you without the weekly help of Elaine Beattie. Each week she receives emails with the latest news and announcements and transforms these messages into the formatted newsletter you receive each Friday. Thank you, Elaine!

Changing Times
|
A few faculty changes will take place at Martha Jones next year. Mrs. McDonough will move to Grade Three; Mrs. Giovanangelo will move to Grade One; Mrs. Dunn will be on leave until Thanksgiving. The faculty and I have interviewed many candidates for the Fall maternity leave and Mrs. Tobin, the new principal, will make the final decision. We also wish the best to Mr. Feintuck who is leaving for work in another school system, Ms. Markofski who is returning to graduate school, and to Mrs. Thurston who is moving to the Thurston Middle School. Thank you for the care, support and instruction you have given the students at Martha Jones!

The PTO would like to take this time to sincerely thank all of the committee chairs and many, many volunteers that gave their time, effort and resources to make this a very successful year for PTO-sponsored programs. From The Health Room
|
|
Dear Parents,
As you know, Monday, June 18 is the last day of school. I want to thank you for another great school year. I thoroughly enjoy taking care of the students at Martha Jones School. I appreciate your being open and honest with me, discussing your child's medical history and health concerns. Having this information has allowed me to take the best possible care of your child.
I do not store any medications in the Health Room during the summer. Therefore, I must ask you to come to school and pick up any remaining medications that belong to your child. This includes oral medications, inhalers, Epi-Pens, eye drops, and nasal sprays. I cannot send any medications home with your child. I will be at school from 8:25 to 3:25 every (long) day until the end of the school year. Please feel free to stop in and retrieve what belongs to you. I will have to discard any medications that are not picked up.
If your child will be taking/storing medication at school next year I will need written permission from you and his/her health care provider. I need a separate set of permission forms signed for each medication. These permission forms are available on-line via the Martha Jones website, under Health Services, or from me directly at school
I truly hope that you and your family have a wonderful, healthy summer.
Sincerely,
Celeste Mahoney RN
Attention Grade 2 Parents
If your child will be entering Grade 3 in September 2012, this notice is for you:
State law requires that all students attending public schools have a physical exam every 3 to 4 years. In Westwood, physicals are required for all students before entering kindergarten, Grade 3, Grade 6 and Grade 9, transfer students from another school system, and every year for high school interscholastic sports.
Your child will need to have an updated physical on file for third grade. It is due to be submitted by February 1, 2013. A physical done and dated between January 01, 2012-January 31, 2013 will be accepted.
If your second grade child has had a physical done already this calendar year, please forward a copy to me. This will fulfill his/her requirement. Otherwise, please be sure to schedule a physical for your child before February 01, 2013, and send a copy to me afterward.
Please do not hesitate to call or email me with any questions. Thanks! - Celeste Mahoney RN

3M Goes to Fisher School
|
| |
|
Students from Miss MacDonalds 3rd grade class had the unique opportunity to step back in time and spend a day doing the things that school children did in 1868. Not only did the students walk to school and dress in the appropriate attire of the time, they took part in "authentic lessons on oral reading, memorization, recitation, figuring on slates, mental arithmetic, penmanship using ink and quill pens, a spelling bee, and a history lesson that teaches the students about the history and restoration of the schoolhouse and challenges them to think about and compare classrooms past and present". Thank you to the Fisher School!

Tide Pool Animals Visit Grade 1
|
|
On Thursday, May 31, the first graders at Martha Jones enjoyed a visit from the New England Aquarium. Students explored and interacted with tide pool animals while learning basic biology and anatomy. The fun and interactive enrichment program reinforced what the first grade is currently learning in a unit on living things and their habitats.
