Foreign Languages Department Marie Barrillon, 7th grade French and Spanish mbarrillon@westwood.k12.ma.us Barbara Morgenlender, 7th grade Spanish bmorgenlender@westwood.k12.ma.us Kathryn O’Reilly, 8th grade French and Spanish Shawn Witt, 8th grade Spanish Foreign Languages Overview Students begin either French or Spanish in grade seven and continue in grade eight, completing the equivalent of one full year of the language before entering high school. Emphasis is placed on both oral and written forms of the language as students begin to learn grammatical structures and vocabulary that will allow them to communicate effectively. All dimensions of language — reading, writing, speaking, and listening — are incorporated into each course. Students learn about the diverse cultures of French- and Spanish-speaking countries. The significance of world languages in a global community receives focus and support throughout the middle school program. |
