Math League Starts on Friday, December 13th, 2019

What is Math League?

Math League is available to students in grades 3, 4, and 5 in all of the Westwood Public Schools.  The students come together for weekly sessions at their own school and compete with students from all five schools for Math Meets in February and in April.

Is Math League right for my child?

Math League is a great way for students to get excited about Math. Interest is more important than aptitude!   Math League takes the fun and engaging elements that make sports exciting and interesting for kids and applies those same principles to Math.  Students work together in small groups to solve complex, multi-step math problems in a fun environment.  The goals of Math League include:

  • to have fun doing math and collaborate with others

  • to foster enthusiasm, confidence, and a love for math and problem solving

  • to develop mathematical flexibility in solving problems

  • to strengthen mathematical intuition

  • to encourage mathematical creativity and ingenuity

  • to provide the joy, thrill and satisfaction of meeting challenges

When does Math League meet?

Math League is held on Fridays from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m.  Drop off begins at 7:40AM. Each grade will have their own room (cafeteria, library, or art/music room).

The first session will be December 13th,  and we will meet every Friday (except vacations) through April 3rd.

There are also two district-wide Math Meets held at Thurston Middle School where students from across the district compete in teams.

Math Meet Dates: February 5th and April 8th: both short Wednesday afternoons

Who runs Math League?

Math League is run entirely by parent volunteers.   Don't worry! You don’t have to be good at math to help! (Plus we have answer sheets for parent volunteers).  Volunteering is more about encouraging the children to persevere and asking questions to help them work through a problem.  Every adult whose child attends Math League is expected to volunteer at least four mornings during the year.  There are two ways to volunteer.  You can be a Grade Level Coordinator or a Grade Level Volunteer.

What do Grade Level Coordinators do?

We need 2-3 Grade Level Coordinators for each grade.   You do not need to be ‘good at math’ to coordinate; you just need to be organized!

Coordinators will:

  • rotate with other coordinators to run the weekly sessions for your grade level.

  • create a schedule for grade level volunteers, communicate that schedule out to the parent volunteers, and make changes as needed

  • organize snacks

  • organize copying of weekly practice sheets for the group

*If we do not secure grade level coordinators, we cannot run Math League for the grade level.  The more coordinators who sign up, the smaller the time commitment for each. Reach out to Jason Hatcher or Justin Parmelee if you are curious about becoming a coordinator:

What do Grade Level Volunteers do?

We need parents/guardians to volunteer at least four times this year to supervise your child’s grade level group.  No math expertise is necessary!

We will host a short Orientation for volunteers on Friday, December 6 from 8:00-8:30.  The goal of the orientation is to answer your questions and make sure you feel comfortable with volunteering.  Grade Level Coordinators will send a volunteer schedule to participating families before the first session starts.

Registration for Math League is online.  Click here to sign up.

Math League costs $30 per child. This helps cover the cost of materials and Math Meet fees.  Cash or checks made out to Hanlon PTO should be sent to the Main Office.  Confidential financial assistance is available.  If you are in need of assistance, please email Ms. Cronin at scronin@westwood.k12.ma.us or call 781-326-7500 x7521.
