As part of our school mission to make Thurston Middle School students "become more critical, creative, sensitive and ethical thinkers", students take part in a developmental guidance program. This class meets once per trimester.

Each grade has a theme and focus. They are as follows:

Grade 6 - Academic Success

Grade 7 - Positive Mental Health

Grade 8 - Career Development

In addition to these classes, counselors structure a number of different opportunities for students to learn social-emotional topics. They include:

  • Introduction to the Guidance Staff - Grade 6 and New Students (X-Block)
  • Bullying Prevention Theater (In conjunction with Westwood Youth and Family Services and the WHS Peer Leaders) - Grade 6
  • Signs of Suicide Prevention Program - Grade 7
  • A.C.T. (Acknowledge, Care, Tell a Trusted Adult) Unit - Taught with 7th grade Drama
  • 8th grade Course Selection Assembly (In conjunction with WHS Guidance Staff)
