Internet Safety for Kids and Families Program (Flyer)

The following message is regarding an upcoming Internet Safety event being held on Tuesday, October 18th from 7:00pm - 8:30pm in the Westwood High School Auditorium:

Join us for an evening with Westwood High School students and Lynette Owens, founder and global director of Trend Micro’s Internet Safety for Kids & Families program, as we tackle some of the most common, confusing, and challenging issues facing young people growing up in a constantly internet-connected world. How does social media impact peer and family relationships? What are the expectations of online privacy for ourselves and for others? What are some pitfalls and hacks for making sure we are in control of technology and it is not in control of us? How do we use the Internet fully while keeping in mind our futures?

Hear some engaging discussions and come prepared with your questions and concerns. We highly encourage students grades 4-8 and their parents to attend this event together.  Our hope is that by discussing these issues as a community, we will understand and find new and more ways to support our students so they don’t just survive but thrive online.

Early Release Wednesday, October 19th

Lunch will not be served.

Westwood Elementary Science Update

This year, Westwood Public Schools has begun a three-year process of alignment with the new Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for Science and Technology/Engineering. The focus of the updated standards is on understanding the big concepts in science and their application to real-world observations, situations and problem solving. After a great deal of research, we have chosen to begin the alignment process with STEMscopes, a science curriculum that was developed at Rice University and is specifically aligned with the Massachusetts Standards. This program emphasizes inquiry and exploration, hands-on, project-based learning, and offers engineering design challenges that encourage student collaboration and allow children to “try on” industry roles as they explore science concepts.

While we work to align our lessons to the new standards, we will continue to cover all core concepts in science. However, this year we will focus our standards alignment efforts on the Physical Sciences strand. Earth and Space Sciences will be the focus in 2017-18 and Life Sciences in 2018-19.
