Parent Input for Class Placement

In the coming weeks, the classroom teachers, special educators, specialists, psychologist, and I will begin the process of class placement for September 2016. We review information about each child’s academic, social, and personal development and use that information when making placement decisions. Our primary goal is to create balanced classrooms in which each child continues to learn and grow.

If you have information about your child that you would like to share, please send it to me in writing (letter or email) by Friday, April 29, 2016. I will copy the letters and emails I receive and distribute them to the placement team members for consideration. Please note that letters and emails are not kept from previous years. Since children change and grow a great deal in a year’s time, it is important to base placement decisions on current information. If you are the parent of multiple Deerfield students in the same grade, such as twins or triplets, you may specify whether you want your children placed in the same class or different classes. Westwood Public Schools does not allow parents to select their children’s teachers. Therefore, requests for specific teachers will not be accepted.

Class assignments will be indicated on the June Report Cards. All class placements are final. Please contact me if you have any questions about the process. For a pdf version of this letter, please click here.

PARCC Testing in Grades 3-5

As I shared at the beginning of January, the Westwood Public Schools will be administering the PARCC exam again this spring to students in grades 3-8. There will only be one testing window this year, during which students will have three English Language Arts sessions and four Math sessions. The only MCAS testing that will take place, at the elementary school level, is the fifth-grade Science and Technology/Engineering test. This test consists of two sessions.

The testing window for the elementary schools begins on Monday, May 2nd and runs through Friday, June 3rd. The exact testing dates for each grade have be posted to the calendar on the Deerfield website and the Deerfield Families Google calendar. Please make every effort to have your children present in school for their assigned testing days.

For additional information regarding the upcoming PARCC and MCAS assessments, please read through this informational slideshow: PARCC/MCAS Assessments at Deerfield. Please let me know if you have any questions regarding the format of the PARCC tests of the testing schedule.
