Outdoor Classroom: Request for Leaves

The Outdoor Classroom needs your help!  Leaves are an important part of our composting program at Deerfield. We combine leaves with plant material from the garden, as well as some fruit and vegetable leftovers from snacks.  The combination of these materials allows our compost to work most effectively and efficiently.  As you are raking (and raking…and raking) your leaves this fall, would you consider donating one or more of your leaf bags to the Outdoor Classroom?  As the finished compost will be used in our vegetable beds, we’re asking for leaves to come from lawns that have not been treated with pesticides or herbicides (including tick and mosquito repellant).  You may drop your leaf bags off at any time in the Outdoor Classroom, or a parent volunteer will be happy to pick them up for you at your convenience.

If you have any questions, please contact Jennie Goossen at jennie.goossen@gmail.com or DeerfieldOC@westwood.k12.ma.us.

Halloween Costume Drive (Halloween Costume Drive Flyer)

Fourteen years ago, a Westwood family bean a Halloween Costume Drive to help children in need. The first year, 25 children received costumes. Through the generous support of our town, 12,000 children, who would not have been able to dress up for Halloween, have had the chance to do so. There are many more children waiting for costumes. Here's how you can make a child smile this Halloween.

Between now and October 28th, bring in a gently used costume labeled in a bag or ask your child to help you choose a new costume for another child who wished for one. Place the costume in one of the bins at any Westwood Public School or at 42 Partridge Drive. All costumes will be distributed throughout the state based on need. For all the children who will smile this year because of your generosity, thank you!

Create the Change Day Donation Opportunity (Project Giving Kids Flyer)

Deerfield parent, Wendy Thurmond, is helping with the Project Giving Kids Create the Change Day in Boston again this year. In the past, the Deerfield community has been so generous in helping collect items to be distributed to those in need.

This year we are collecting for The Jared Box Project. The goal of The Jared Box Project is to lift the spirits of children in the hospital by giving them special boxes filled with little toys and games. The boxes symbolize the importance of play and are filled with well wishes, hope, and love. Please read the attached flyer for more information regarding the donation items. We will be donating items at Deerfield through Friday, November 2nd.
