Girls State
The Girls State program, open to all girls who have completed their junior year of high school, teaches good citizenship and gives a direct look at how state and local government works. Girls learn how to participate in state government during a week of study at Stonehill College where they work together as a self-governing body and develop valuable skills in public speaking, journalism and debating. Two girls are selected from each Girls State program to attend Girls Nation for a week long training program in Washington, D.C. There they will run for office, campaign for legislation and will have the opportunity to meet with representatives and senators. At the end of that week, the girls will meet with President Obama at the White House.
Application forms are available on the Westwood High School website under Forms and Publications and are due in to Mrs. Gates in the Principal’s office by March 31, 2011. Please see Mrs. Gates with any questions you may have.
Girls State meets at Stonehill College from June 11th to June 17th and is sponsored and funded by American Legion Auxiliary Units and American Legion Posts. No fees are required.
