The Elementary Curriculum Night will be held at Deerfield on this Thursday, September 28th. This event provides parents and guardians with an opportunity to hear an overview of the year’s curriculum, see their child’s classroom, and ask general questions regarding the school year.

This evening is for adults only. Babysitting will be provided during the event. Please let Mrs. Miller (mmiller@westwood.k12.ma.us) know if you need babysitting at Deerfield by Wednesday, September 27th.

New Back Steps

Over the weekend the back steps that lead out to the Deerfield playground were replaced. the new light brown steps and white railings look great and are very safe and sturdy. Thank you so much to Director of Operations, Mr. Aries, and Assistant Director of Operations, Mr. Baldwin, for arranging for this work to be completed.

New Recess Supplies

Thank you so much to the PTO for ordering a large and extremely generous collection of new recess supplies, including balls, frisbees, and hula hoops. We really appreciate your contributions and on-going support with every part of our students' school day.

Baby Items Collection Drive

Between September 27th and October 3rd, we will be collecting baby items at the Deerfield school. Wendy Thurmond, Deerfield parent and Project Giving Kids board member, has organized the collection drive as a part of the Create The Change Day 2017, which will be held on October 8th.

The following is a list of requested items for each grade:

Kindergarten: Bibs
First Grade: Baby Board Books
Second Grade: Baby Bottles
Third Grade: Baby Wash
Fourth Grade: Baby Lotion
Fifth Grade: Beginner Forks/Spoons

If you are able to donate, please place the donating items in the bin in the front lobby of Deerfield.

Candy Drive (picture)

The following message is from the Wellesley Dental Group regarding their Annual Community Candy Drive:

All Westwood Schools are invited to join Wellesley Dental Group's 10th Annual Community Candy Drive to benefit the U.S. Troops serving overseas. From November 1st to November 8th, we will be collecting candy, handwritten notes and cards for our soldiers.

Our goal is to teach the kids lessons in giving by encouraging them to share their extra Halloween candy with our troops overseas. These sweet treats and the handwritten cards are a reminder of home for these soldiers, and a reflection of our gratitude. The packages will be sent via CarePacks, a non-profit organization, along with oral hygiene supplies.

We are inviting all schools and organizations to participate in our Press Event - November 9th at 10:00 am. Local media and photographers will capture your generous donation. Principals, faculty, parents, and students (with the permission of their teachers, of course) are welcome to attend.

To schedule a candy drop-off, please call (781-237-9071) or email us at candydrive@wellesleydentalgroup.com.

Let's keep this fun tradition going! Thank you!

Reminder: Arrival Procedure

We have a Before School Program at Deerfield. This program begins at 7:00am and runs from Monday through Friday. Please contact the Westwood Extended Day Program Coordinator, Janice Van Hyning (jvanhyning@westwood.k12.ma.us), for more information.

The school day begins at 8:25am. At 8:20am, a bell will ring calling students to line-up and proceed to their classrooms. Students who arrive between 8:05am-8:20am will begin their day on the playground where staff members will supervise a morning arrival time. In the case of inclement weather, the students will proceed to the gym during this time. Please do not drop your child off before 8:05am. We are not able to provide supervision of students prior to that time.

Students who arrive after 8:25am are tardy and must check-in at the main office before proceeding to their classrooms. Please make every effort to help your child arrive before our 8:25am start time.

Please do not park in the painted spaces in the traffic circle between 8:00am-8:30am. If you choose to walk your child to the playground, please park in an available parking space on the side of the school. The traffic circle is reserved for cars with students who will walk themselves to the playground.

If you arrive as one of our vans is dropping off Deerfield students, please do not pass the vans or stop too close behind the vans. The vans need to have unobstructed access to the curb ramp.

Reminder: Dismissal Procedure

The school day ends at 2:45pm. When the first bell rings, students walking home or being picked-up exit the building through the main entrance. When the second bell rings, students taking a bus home or to the Westwood Extended Day Program proceed to the gym to wait for the bus.

Please do not park in the painted spaces in the traffic circle between 2:30pm-3:00pm. During dismissal time, the traffic circle is reserved for live parking. If you plan to remain at the school following dismissal, please park in an available parking space on the side of the school. Please only pick-up your child on the sidewalk side of the traffic circle, so students do not have to walk in front of cars that may be ready to exit the traffic circle.

If you arrive prior to the 2:45pm dismissal time, please pull as far up in the traffic circle as possible, leaving the space directly in front of the school open for our student vans. This will help to prevent a back-up onto Deerfield Avenue.

During dismissal and for all school events, please do not park on the far (non-school) side of Deerfield Avenue. That side is a designated No Parking area. The Westwood Police will issue parking tickets to cars parked on that side.
