Wellness Department

The Westwood High Wellness Department's goal is for all students to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to make life-long healthy choices that sustain a well-balanced lifestyle.  Our Wellness Program integrates both Health and Physical Education together meeting every other day either in the Health classroom or the gymnasium.  The Health classes are focused on the National Health Standards.  The approach to learning is Skills Based which drives the classroom activities and projects.  The Physical Education program focuses on activities that promote lifelong skills and based in the National Physical Education Standards.   


Wellness I (2.50 credits; 9th grade) 

Students alternate between Health Education in the classroom and Physical Education activities in the gymnasium facilities. 

The health skills focus in this course will include the following:

• Nutrition (Macro and Micro Nutrients with an Analysis of Meal Planning) 

• Alcohol (Health Risks, Binge Drinking, BAC, ABV, and Thoughtful Decision-Making) 

• Substance Use - Nicotine and Marijuana (Health risks, peer influence, and refusal skills), 

• Reproductive Education (Reproduction, Protection, and Infection) 

• Bullying (Awareness and “cyber-bullying”) 

 

The physical activity units in this course include the following: 

• Personal fitness (introduction to resistance training) 

• Cardiovascular (fitness and flexibility) 

• Team games 

• Net games 

• Cooperative challenges 

• Group fitness



 

Wellness II (2.50 credits; 10th grade) 

Students alternate between health education in the classroom and physical activities in the gymnasium facilities. 

The health skills focus in this course will include: 

• Nutrition and Healthy Habits (Whole Foods, GMOs, Organic Foods, Processed Foods, Food Labels, Goal-Setting) 

• Substance Use and Abuse (Nicotine, Marijuana, Alcohol, Other Illicit Drugs, Cultural Norms and the Media) 

• Ethical Behavior (Academic, Athletic, Professional, and Social) 

• Healthy Relationships (Defining Healthy and Unhealthy Relationships, Risk Management Regarding Alcohol Use and Sexual Behavior, Sexual Consent, Sexual Harassment, Dating Violence and Sexual Assault) 

• Sexuality (LGBTQ+, Cisgender, Gender, Sexuality, and Identity) 

• Mental Health (Resilience and Mindfulness)

 

The physical activity units in this course include: 

• Personal fitness (Designing and implementing a personalized fitness plan) 

• Team games 

• Net games 

• Cooperative challenges 

• Group fitness
