Early-Release Day on Wednesday, September 12th
Wednesday, September 12th will be an early-release day for students. Students will be dismissed at 11:25am and lunch will not be served in school.
Charlie Appelstein Workshop on September 12th (flyer)
The Westwood Public Schools and Westwood Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) are please to welcome Charlie Appelstein for a town-wide parent workshop. Mr. Appelstein is the author of the book, No Such Thing as a Bad Kid and will be talking about starting the school year out right with homework and other routines and expectations. This event will be held on Wednesday, September 12th from 7:00pm - 9:00pm at the Sheehan Elementary School.
Welcome Back Picnic
The Deerfield Community Picnic will be held on Friday, September 14th starting at 5:30pm. All staff members, students, and families are invited to this community event. New Deerfield families are invited to come at 5:00pm for a PTO welcome. Pack a picnic dinner and gather on the fields behind the Deerfield school as we all usher in the new school year together.
SEPAC Overview (flyer)
Please read the attached flyer regarding an upcoming SEPAC event during which the Special Education programming and services in the district will be shared. The event will take place on September 24th from 7:00pm - 9:00pm at Westwood High School.

Thank you so much to the Deerfield PTO for providing a delicious breakfast for our teachers on Wednesday, August 29th. This was the first official day back for teachers and having breakfast together was such a nice way to reconnect with each other and kick-off the year. We truly appreciate your generosity and ongoing support!

FRIENDS NETWORK (flyer)
Who: Westwood residents in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades
When: November 2018 – April 2019, Wednesdays from 5:15 – 6:15 PM or 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM
Where: Patricia Carty-Larkin Senior Center, 60 Nahatan Street
What: The Friends Network program matches young Westwood residents with high school aged residents in 1:1 pairs that meet weekly to engage in games and activities in a relaxed setting. This is a great way for children to engage with a positive role model while forming a special friendship and having fun!

GIRLS GROUP (flyer)
Who: Westwood girls in 4th – 6th grade
When: Fall 2018, Wednesdays from 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Where: Islington Community Center
What: These 12-week groups will focus on navigating friendships and cliques, avoiding peer pressure, managing bullying situations, and exploring topics such as body image, confidence and self-esteem. We utilize art projects, videos and games to help reinforce these important topics in fun and creative ways!

STRUCTURED PLAY GROUPS (flyer)
Who: Westwood residents in Kindergarten – 5th grade
When: Fall 2018 – Spring 2019, one afternoon per week from 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Where: Islington Community Center; Hanlon, Martha Jones, and Sheehan Extended Day programs
What: These 8-week groups are designed to emphasize the continued development of adaptive social and conflict-resolution skills as well as self-esteem and social confidence. Organized play and drawing activities are used to reinforce weekly topics such as initiating & developing friendships, working cooperatively as a team, appropriate communication, decision-making, as well as appreciating one’s own strengths and the differences of others, etc.
